Mattoon Rotary recognizes one Senior male and female at their monthly luncheon as Students of the Month.
Students are nominated by Mattoon High School staff and the selection criteria includes outstanding academic achievement and citizenship. November Rotary Students of the Month are Avery Gill and Colton Smith.
Avery Gill is the daughter of Michelle Gill and Kyle Gill. She has played tennis all four years at Mattoon High School. Avery was inducted into NHS her sophomore year, and has been a part of it ever since. She is one of the first members of the Reading Rangers club that began last year at MHS. Finally, she is a member of two different groups through B.I.O.N.I.C., the freshman mentoring team, and the tutoring team. Avery plans on going to college, but as of now is not sure where she will attend or what she'll major in in the fall.
Colton Smith is the son of Matt and Sara Smith. He has played basketball at MHS all four years at Mattoon High School. He is currently a Class E student, and a member of NHS. Colton is involved in the Young Adult Ministry at Broadway Christian Church. He also volunteers at the Coles County Fair.
Colton's future plans are to attend a 4-year university to play basketball and graduate with a business related degree. After he graduates from college, he would like to become a Conservation Police Officer.
Congratulations to Avery and Colton!
