Mattoon Rotary recognizes one Senior male and female at their monthly luncheon as Students of the Month.
Students are nominated by MHS staff and the selection criteria includes outstanding academic achievement and citizenship. The Rotary Students of the Month for February were Slater Trier and Emmalyn Whalin.
Slater is the son of Travis and Deneille Trier. He participates in Football, Baseball and NHS. Slater volunteers in his community in the children’s program at his church, assisting in coaching the Mattoon Hitmen 10u, and more. Slater plans to attend the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and pursue a degree in Aerospace Engineering. He hopes to work in the field of Aerospace Engineering for Lockheed Martin designing aircraft.
Emmalyn Whalin is the daughter of Adam and Nicole Whalin. She is taking business and architecture classes at LIFT and attending an internship at The Upchurch Group three days a week. At the LIFT building, Emmalyn is involved in the Lead team. At MHS, she is involved in NHS, Key Club, P7 Club, and BIONIC (grief and transfer team). Emmalyn plans to attend the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign this fall to obtain a bachelor's in Architecture.
