Franklin Preschool recently went to watch a movie and enjoy popcorn at the Life Span Center as part of a reward. Students worked hard to meet their "wildly important goals" in their classrooms to enjoy the trip. We would like to thank the Life Span Center for having us and congratulate the students for achieving their goals!
Riddle Elementary art students in Grade 2/3 Miss Blackwell's class had some fun making paper self-portraits. Students worked fast to complete their portraits in one single class period. Students were encouraged to add details to their work.
The Second Annual Tech Leadership Celebration will be held at Williams Elementary on May 5th from 9:00-10:00 AM. All families are welcome to watch as students gather from across the district to celebrate their tech achievements from the past year! The Mattoon CUSD #2 Transportation Department was a part of the Festival of the Young Child at the Mall on April 15 for the "Touch a Truck" event.
Riddle Elementary 4th and 5th-grade students are invited to participate in the Illinois Readers Choice Program, the Bluestem Award. For each Bluestem book read, students answer questions about the book and are entered into a monthly drawing for free books. Pictured are the drawing winners from the month of March. Students also recently voted for their favorite book. The winning book, chosen by students across Illinois, was "Twins" written by Varian Johnson and illustrated by Shannon Wright.
Building Trades students have been working on the following projects this past week:

Katrina Farris, Director of Early Childhood at Mattoon CUSD #2 recently collaborated with DCFS to provide car seats for families in need. The car seats are part of a grant with IDOT to be used for installation with any nationally certified car seat technician.
Farris also presented about the classes she provides through the Mattoon Public Library Literacy Grant that provides parenting classes through the Illinois State Library grant. Additionally, she was able to present information on our FREE Birth-3 Program.
We'd like to thank Ms. Farris and everyone involved in this for the difference they are making in our community!
The Citizens Against Child Abuse Spring 2023 Education Event will take place on Monday, May 1st from 12:00 - 1:30 PM at 700 W Lincoln Ave in Charleston. No registration is required.
Franklin Preschool is offering a "Summer Learning Adventure" to preschool students! Our June camp is already full, so sign up for the July camp while you still can!
This camp is for children who have attended Franklin in the 2022-2023 school year and will return for another year of learning in 2023-2024. This camp is not currently offered to outside students.
Camp will be available daily from 8:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The camp will last three weeks:
July 10-28, 2023
Each day, campers will focus on early math, literacy, fine motor, and SEL with incorporated STEAM, Art, and Music. Leadership opportunities will also be embedded within the curriculum. We will also host weekly visitors, such as Douglas Hart, U of I Extension Office, YMCA, etc. to incorporate community development and fun!
At the end of the three weeks, the campers will get to attend one field trip!
