Mattoon Rotary recognizes one Senior male and female at their monthly luncheon as Students of the Month.

Students are nominated by Mattoon High School (MHS) staff and the selection criteria include outstanding academic achievement and citizenship. Rotary Students of the Month for December winners were Chloe Hettinger and Aydin Tariq.

Chloe is the daughter of Doug and Beth Hettinger. She is involved in Student Council, NHS, Team Massive and the BIONIC Tutor and Transfer teams. Chloe is on the MHS Cheer and Track teams. Outside of MHS, Chloe is on the Mattoon Academy Competition dance team, and she was crowned the 2022 Miss Mattoon! Her future plans are to attend a four-year university, preferably the University of Tennessee, majoring in interior architecture and minoring in either interior design or business. Chloe hopes to continue cheering in college as well.

Aydin Tariq is the son of Faisal and Jennifer Tariq. He is involved in Wordsmiths, Leadership Action team, Student Council, Spectrum and is on the Curriculum Coordinating Committee. Outside of MHS, Aydin is also a Student Advisor for PBS Newshour, a State Policy Writer on Youth Mental Health, and a Youth Advocate. Aydin's future plans are to attend a university, majoring in Political Science.
