School bus safety. Help keep our children safe by following these school bus safety laws. Rules of the road. 1. When you see a school bus stop sign extended and red lights flashing, you are required by law to stop. Do not proceed until the signal has been deactivated. If you are within 10 ft of the bus, be especially cautious as this is where children are in the most danger of being hit. 2. State law requires school buses to stop for all railroad crossings. If you are approaching the bus from the front, you may proceed past with caution. If you are approaching the bus from the rear, the law prohibits driving over the center line to pass if the bus is within 100 feet of railroad crossing. 3. The most dangerous part of a child's school bus transporation is the loading and unloading procedure of the route. Any time you see kids out, be extra alert. Children expect vehicles to stop for them at a school bus stop. Did you know? MCUSD #2 has utilized cameras on stop signs for the safety of all students. We are mandated to report violations to the Mattoon Police Department regularly. When you violate the Illinois State Stopping Law, you may be facing these charges. $300 first time fine, 3 month suspension of license.

From June 10-14, MHS JROTC students joined 212 cadets from 19 different schools across Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin for the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge (JCLC) in Marseilles, IL . 🏕️ Cadets formed teams with students from other schools and tackled activities like rappelling, archery, raft building, nightly sports, zip lining, land navigation, and an obstacle course. 🎯🏹🛶 Throughout the camp, cadets took on peer leadership roles and were evaluated on their motivation, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities. Both individual cadets and platoons were recognized for their outstanding performance. 👏🏅

MHS is excited to host a youth sports camp for cross country! 🏃‍♀️🏃 This camp is free for all Mattoon residents entering 3rd through 8th grade in the upcoming 2024-25 school year. You are not required to attend an institute within the MCUSD2 district to attend Cross Country Camp. ☀️ No registration is required for Cross Country Camp. Camp takes place on Thursdays, July 11, 18, and 25 from 7:30 AM to 8:45 AM. Participants should meet behind the MHS football bleachers in Memorial Square.
