Riddle Elementary Art Students have been busy this month incorporating math and estimation with some pumpkinology! The students were given the opportunity to guess the weight and number of pumpkin seeds inside a massive pumpkin. Sophia is pictured collecting seeds from the giant pumpkin, and Aubrey is pictured beside the giant pumpkin. Aubrey was the winner by guessing that the pumpkin had 707 seeds, which was the closest guess to the actual count of 738 seeds. Not pictured is Mackenzie, who guessed that the pumpkin weighed 75 pounds, which turned out to be exactly right! On average, a pumpkin has about 400-500 seeds. πŸŽƒ

In October, kindergarten students at Riddle Elementary listened to the story 'I Need My Monster' by Amanda Noll. Afterward, students designed their own monster! Their designs were then sent to Jennie's Wearables. Jennifer Mayhew, the owner, then used sublimation to transfer their designs to fabrics and sewed the small pillows for each student! The reveal day for the pillows was held on Friday, November 17th. Every student was able to take their pillow home to enjoy their very own monster! πŸ‘ΎπŸ§Ÿβ€β™‚οΈ

Williams Elementary multi-age (4/5) classes (McCoy & Schafer) recently had a demonstration from Coles-Moultrie Electric Cooperative. A lineman came in to teach the students about the process of fixing a downed wire and the safety equipment they have to wear, daily. We appreciate him taking the time to teach the students a little more about his career! πŸ™Œ

MHS Honors Physics students recently won first place among all schools in the Robinson High School Engineering Competition. The students spent several weeks working in teams of two designing and building toothpick bridges, mousetrap cars, catapults, and rubber-band-powered flyers. They tested their models against students from ten area schools in the competition. πŸ† Jack Lapeyrouse and Aiden Hudson won first place overall in the team competition by dominating the individual events, taking first place in the toothpick bridge, mousetrap car, and catapult contests. All of Mattoon’s teams placed in the top three of at least one competition. Chloe Hettinger and Kaitlyn Parker finished second in the toothpick bridge competition while Daniel Catt and Keenan Kersh placed third, J.D. Sullivan and Slater Trier took second in the mousetrap car competition, and Ryan Stevens and Luke Ferris placed third in the catapult competition. Lapeyrouse, Hudson, Sullivan, and Catt also took second place in the wild card competition, in which they built an 8-foot-tall free-standing tower in ten minutes using drinking straws and tape. πŸ›• We are proud of our students for putting so much hard work into preparing for this competition. They learned a lot about engineering principles and applying physics to solve engineering challenges, and they did a great job working together to earn a first place finish. πŸŽ‰πŸ₯‡
