MMS was proud to have Chris Suerdieck from the Local History Center at the Mattoon Public Library as a guest speaker on April 3rd. Chris spoke to 7th graders about Mattoon's involvement in the Civil War. We appreciate Chris taking the time to share our local and national history with the kids! 📜🇺🇸
5 Williams Elementary students recently participated in the Fastest Kid in Coles County race at the Big Blue Classic outdoor track meet held at O’Brien stadium. The runners that participated were Reece Lindley, Ja’Layah Portis, Braxton Roberts, Dylan Gonzalez and Blayn Watts. All of our students competed very well in their heats either winning or placing 2nd! 🏆🥇🎉👟
Congrats to the Riddle Art March Contest Winners! The students were challenged last month by adding color and design to a plain top hat. Winners were selected by demonstrating creativity and high quality craftsmanship. The students were informed of their winning by fifth grade student leaders Lily Herschberger and Jaynah Tucker. 🎨

Riddle Art Students have been working throughout this school year painting the 2023-24 Cafeteria Mural. The mural is approximately 14 feet long and the theme is patriotic. Every school year, Riddle hosts a Veterans Day celebration inviting local veterans to our school to thank them for their service. At the Veterans day celebration, the honored guests gather in the school cafeteria before the parade. This mural will be a constant reminder of the sacrifices our Veterans have endured to secure our freedom. The students did a great job creating this! 🎨🇺🇸
IAR testing for Williams, Riddle and Mattoon Middle School will take place April 8-12. Best of luck to our students as they prepare! 🌟📚

We are excited to announce that students throughout the district will have the opportunity to view the April 8, 2024 total solar eclipse at their schools. 🌑🌞
Mattoon will experience a partial eclipse of 99.37% beginning at approximately 12:46 p.m. with the time of maximum coverage at approximately 2:04 p.m. 🕑
To help students better understand the science behind a solar eclipse, many teachers will incorporate this into their teaching this week prior to the eclipse. 👩🏫
We will be reviewing expectations and safety precautions with students to ensure a fun and memorable experience. Students and staff will be supplied with the ISO 12312-2 International Standard eclipse safe glasses that they will be required to wear during the viewing. 😎
School specific information regarding the event timeline has been emailed to families. Please communicate with your child’s teacher if you wish for your student to opt out of this event. Due to their age, students at Franklin Preschool will not be participating in the viewing, but will instead be participating in mini lessons and activities surrounding the eclipse. ✉️
