Riddle Elementary School student Jessen Horst, a third-grader in Jennifer Ferrar’s class, was selected to be a Kidcaster on WCIA. Jessen spent the morning with Jack Gerfen and helped him in a live weather forecast. They also interviewed Jessen about the December tornado, which will air on April 19. What a fantastic experience! *Wednesday WIGs Student Takeover* Hey! I'm Isabella Compton and I'm a student at MMS in 7th grade. One of my favorite things we do at school is WIGs! WIGs are wildly important goals for all. Our principal, Mr. Pugh, has displayed his personal WIG to encourage others to reach for their WIGS. His goal is to be in the halls during transition times 80% of the time to be there for his students. My personal WIG is to read a book of a different genre by Spring Break! Right now, I'm enjoying A Good Girls Guide to Murder by: Holly Jackson. #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #MMS #WednesdayWIGs #WildlyImportantGoals

Mrs. Hawbaker, twelve of her students, and Ms. Craig at Riddle Elementary have decided to participate in the 3,000 squats challenge in April for the children's heart foundation to support congenital heart failure. They will be doing 90 squats at school each day with homework of 10 each night and 100 each day on the weekends to get 3,000 squats a piece for the month of April! Mrs. Hawbaker is sponsoring each kid that completes the challenge for $5. The kids and teachers are building teamwork, creating comradery, working for a bigger cause, and learning dedication and commitment to support congenital heart failure in babies and children. Here is a picture of the team, they are calling themselves, Heart Squatters, with their very own trackers. Best of luck to all those doing the challenge! #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #RiddleElementary

It's National School Librarian Day and National Library Week and our celebration of Mattoon District Librarians continues. Next up, we want to say thank you to Mrs. Hettinger who works at Williams Elementary School. "I am so fortunate to be a part of the Williams Elementary School family! My favorite part of being the Librarian is that I get to see everyone in the entire building every week. I get to help them find just the book/author that can transport them to magical, far-off places. The best part of my day is when a student finds something new they are excited about. I also love seeing students outside of the school walls and they tell me about a book they are reading. Our One Book One School project has already kicked off with a bulletin board that has clues about this year's selection. Every day we reveal a new clue. The books will be distributed the day we come back from spring break. One book goes to each household, thanks to a grant from the Howell Asphalt Family Foundation. We look forward to this project each year. We will conclude the book with a celebration at our Title One Family Night being held on May 5th this year." - Mrs. Hettinger #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #WilliamsElementary

Mrs. Minger at the Mattoon Middle school is asking for greeting card donations. They do not need to be entire cards, just the front. She is planning on having students create DIY greeting card journals after Spring Break. You can drop off donations at the MMS Office or the Mattoon Public Library. #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #MMS

It's National School Librarian Day and National Library Week and our celebration of Mattoon District Librarians continues. We want to say thank you to Mrs. Minger who works at Mattoon Middle School. " I never feel like I am coming to work, as my job is so wonderful and I love it so much that it never feels like "work". I LOVE our students here so much and try to learn every single kiddos name so when they come into the Media Center I can call them by name! I want each and every student who comes into the Media Center to feel like it is a safe place where they are loved and cared for and valued. We always have fun things happening in the Media Center - like a spring egg hunt or a collaborative puzzle or collaborative coloring pages, or DIY Projects. I just visited a few public libraries this week that have awesome Maker Spaces, so I will begin implementing new things in the library to meet that need as well!" - Mrs. Minger #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #MMS

This week is National Library Week and today is also National School Librarian Day. Today we will be highlighting the Librarians in our District to show our thankfulness for all they do for our kids! First up, we want to say thank you to James Sledge who works at Mattoon High School. "As Covid protocols have lightened, the library has been busier than ever. We have a steady stream of students all day, every day. The kids come to the library to work on coursework, to meet with Learning Lab teachers, to check out books and read, or occasionally enjoy games with classmates. We have several chess boards including one 8’ by 8’ MEGA chess set. Even though we’ve entered the digital age, one to one technology with Chromebooks, the kids have checked out physical books by the hundreds this year. We provide them with the newest titles as well as old favorites. If we don’t have what they’re looking for we can get it for them. I’ve really enjoyed and appreciated having the kids return and seeing their faces and knowing that they still love the library." - James Sledge #MCUSD2 #Mattoon #MHS #NationalSchoolLibrarianDay
